Kansas City, Missouri.

Here are some highlights of the contest given in an abbreviated format.

Entry Divisions:
  Poetry  Maximum 40 lines per poem
  Fiction  Maximum 2,500 words
     
Who could enter the contest?
 

Any Sixth, Seventh, Eighth or Ninth Grade Student currently enrolled in any Kansas City, Missouri, charter school.

   
Students had to submit their contest entries to their teachers by the deadline date of Friday, February 2, 2007.  Teachers then submitted all entries to:

All entries had to be received by contest coordinators
by February 9, 2007.
  • All student entries had to be submitted by teachers at the charter school where the student attends.

  • No independent entries were accepted by mail, fax, email or other means.

  • Winners were notified March 19, 2007.

  • A panel of independent judges selected the winners.

  • No critiques or reviews of entry materials were provided.

Each of the top ten students received:
  • a $25 guest author honorarium,

  • FREE admission to the all-day Urban NE Writers Conference on March 24, 2007 (valued at $60.00),

  • publication of their winning works online in the Downgo Sun (on this web site of Northeast Arts KC) during National Poetry Month, April 2007.

In addition, the outstanding student writer in fiction and the outstanding student writer in poetry were invited to read their work at the Urban Writers Conference.
